The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
